Japanese Pokémon Card Packs Rise to ¥230 in May 2027: What Changes

Published Nov 7, 2026 7 min read

The Rundown

  • The Japanese expansion pack (拡張パック, 5 cards) goes from ¥200 to ¥230 tax included for some new products released in May 2027 or later. A 30-pack box at pack price goes from ¥6,000 to ¥6,900.
  • It is the second step in 10 months. The January 30, 2026 notice moved the same pack from ¥180 to ¥200 for May 2026 releases, so the total move is ¥180 to ¥230, or +27.8%.
  • The notice says some new products, not all. Some expansion packs may be priced differently, and other price lines (high class packs, decks, special sets) get a price product by product.
  • Sets released through April 2027 sit in the ¥200 column. Aura Seeker (November 27, 2026) is listed at ¥200 a pack on its official set page.
  • MSRP is not the market price. Proxy listings for hyped sets already run above the printed price, and this notice does not set second-hand prices.

If you buy Japanese Pokémon sealed product from overseas, your price math just got a new line. On November 6, 2026, The Pokémon Company announced that the Japanese expansion pack goes from ¥200 to ¥230 tax included for some new products released in May 2027 or later. That puts a standard 30-pack box at ¥6,900 at pack MSRP, up from ¥6,000. It’s the second increase in ten months.

Below: the exact numbers, what the notice does and doesn’t say, and what it does to an import order once proxy fees and shipping sit on top.

How much will a Japanese Pokémon booster pack cost in 2027?

¥230 tax included for the expansion packs it applies to, starting with products released in May 2027. Anything released through April 2027 sits in the ¥200 column.

The notice (一部商品価格改定のお知らせ, “notice of price revision for some products”) cites rising raw-material costs. It is a short table with two columns, and here it is next to the step that came before it.

Release windowExpansion pack MSRP (5 cards, tax incl.)30-pack box at pack MSRPExamples
April 2026 or earlier¥180¥5,400Night Wanderer box, ¥5,400 on Pokémon Center Online
May 2026 to April 2027¥200¥6,000Abyss Eye (May 22, 2026), Aura Seeker (November 27, 2026)
May 2027 or later¥230¥6,900No product announced yet

The box column is our arithmetic: 30 packs times the pack price. The notice prices packs, not boxes. A standard Japanese expansion box is 30 packs of 5 cards, which we confirmed on the Pokémon Center Online listings in our guide to what a Japanese box guarantees, and Storm Emeralda and Abyss Eye boxes list at ¥6,000. Aura Seeker’s set page gives ¥200 a pack but does not state the box configuration yet.

Two steps in ten months: ¥180, ¥200, ¥230

The pack has gone up ¥50 in two announcements, 27.8% in total. Here is how the steps break down.

  • January 30, 2026: ¥180 to ¥200 for products released May 2026 or later. That’s +11.1%, or +¥600 on a 30-pack box.
  • November 6, 2026: ¥200 to ¥230 for products released May 2027 or later. That’s +15%, or +¥900 on a 30-pack box.
  • Combined: ¥180 to ¥230 is +27.8%. A box at pack MSRP moves from ¥5,400 to ¥6,900, +¥1,500.

Both notices use the same wording, the same reason (raw-material costs) and the same May cutover, one year apart. Each one names a release month, not a date when shelves get re-stickered.

💡 The cutover is by release month, not by purchase date

Both notices sort products by when they are released. A ¥200 set does not become a ¥230 set in May 2027. The new price applies to the new products it covers, starting with those released that month.

What the notice says, and what it doesn’t

The November notice is short, so it’s worth reading closely before anyone tells you what it means.

It says:

  • The revision applies to some new products (一部新商品) released in May 2027 or later.
  • Expansion packs (拡張パック, 5 cards): ¥200 for products released in April 2027 or earlier, ¥230 for products released in May 2027 or later.
  • Some expansion packs may be priced differently.
  • Products in other price lines will be priced product by product.

It doesn’t say:

  • Which May 2027 set will be the first at ¥230. No May 2027 product has been announced.
  • What high class packs, special sets, decks or anything outside the standard pack will cost. Those get individual prices.
  • A sentence about existing products. The January notice ended with one, stating that products released in April 2026 or earlier were unchanged. The November notice doesn’t repeat it. Its table labels ¥200 as the price for products released in April 2027 or earlier, and current set pages still print their own MSRP: Abyss Eye and Aura Seeker both show ¥200 a pack.

The “other price lines” clause matters if you mostly buy high class packs or anniversary boxes. Those already follow their own pricing (a high class pack box lists at ¥5,500 for 10 packs of 10, and the 30th CELEBRATION box at ¥7,200 for 20 packs of 6), and the notice gives no number for them at all.

What it means if you buy from overseas

For an overseas buyer, the MSRP is the smallest moving part of the bill. Proxy service fees are charged per order or per item, and international shipping is charged by weight, so neither one grows with the pack price.

Take one standard box shipped to the US at MSRP, using figures from our own fee and shipping guides: Buyee’s ¥500 per-order service fee, and the ¥5,300 EMS rate for the up-to-1kg tier a single box falls into (see shipping costs from Japan for Pokémon cards).

One 30-pack box to the US, at MSRP¥200 set¥230 set
Box (30 × pack price)¥6,000¥6,900
Proxy service fee (Buyee, per order)¥500¥500
EMS, up to 1kg¥5,300¥5,300
Total before domestic shipping and payment fees¥11,800¥12,700

The box itself goes up 15%. The landed total goes up ¥900, about 7.6%. Domestic shipping inside Japan, payment or deposit fees and import duties vary by service and country and come on top. Our breakdown of proxy fees covers those lines.

The bigger catch is that hot sets rarely trade at MSRP on Mercari or Yahoo! Auctions in the first place. If a box sells for well above ¥6,000 on release, a ¥900 change in the printed price is not what decides your total. Demand is.

🗼 What we can do about this

A proxy listing never tells you the printed MSRP, so it's hard to know whether ¥8,000 for a box is the new price, a market premium, or a markup on a ¥200 set. Send us the set and how many boxes or packs you want. Our job is finding the best way to buy it from Japan and telling you: we check the live Japanese listings (Mercari, Yahoo! Auctions, shop stock) and send back a free report with the listings we would pick, the yen price against that set's official MSRP, condition notes, and an all-in estimate including proxy fees and shipping to your country. Are English Pokémon card prices affected?

The notice is posted on the Japanese Pokémon Card Game site and covers Japanese products. It says nothing about English-language products, which are priced separately, so don’t read it as an English price change. If English MSRPs move, that will come from the English publisher’s own announcement.

What you can compare is the gap that already exists between the two. Our Japan vs US price comparison runs that math for singles and sealed product, and a May 2027 set at ¥230 a pack narrows the per-pack difference for sealed buyers. Run the numbers again with the new MSRP once a ¥230 set is actually announced.

What the increase does not change

It doesn’t set second-hand prices. Single cards on Mercari and Yahoo! Auctions are priced by demand for that card. A chase card from a ¥230 set will not cost more because the pack did, and a weak set at ¥230 can still sell below MSRP once the hype passes.

It doesn’t touch sets on the shelf today. Aura Seeker launches November 27, 2026 at ¥200 a pack, per its own set page. Every Japanese set through April 2027 is listed in the ¥200 column.

It doesn’t change how you buy. Lotteries, store limits and proxy routes work the same way. The only new step is checking which column a set falls in before you judge a price. The release calendar lists confirmed dates and prices as they’re announced.

⚠️ "New price" on a ¥200 set is a markup, not the revision

Expect listings that point to the price increase to justify asking more for sets that were released at ¥200. The revision covers some new products released from May 2027, not sets already out. If a seller cites the "new MSRP" for Abyss Eye, Aura Seeker or any set released before May 2027, check the set's official page. It still prints ¥200 a pack, so the extra is the seller's premium.

The short version

Budget ¥6,900 at MSRP for a standard 30-pack box from a May 2027 set priced at ¥230, and ¥6,000 for anything released through April 2027. Check the set’s official page for its printed pack price before comparing listings, because the notice leaves room for some packs to be priced differently. And once shipping and proxy fees are added, remember that the MSRP change is a smaller share of what you pay than the headline percentage suggests.

Frequently asked questions

How much will a Japanese Pokémon booster box cost in 2027?

For a standard 30-pack expansion box released in May 2027 or later at the new ¥230 pack price, the MSRP works out to ¥6,900 tax included. Sets released through April 2027 stay in the ¥200 column, which is ¥6,000 a box. The notice prices packs, so confirm the pack count and box price on each product's own listing.

Does the ¥230 price apply to every new Japanese Pokémon set?

No. The notice covers some new products released in May 2027 or later and says some expansion packs may be priced differently. Products in other price lines, such as high class packs or decks, will be priced individually, so check each product's official page when it is announced.

Will English Pokémon cards get more expensive too?

This notice comes from the Japanese Pokémon Card Game site and covers Japanese products only. It says nothing about English-language products, which are priced separately. Watch the English publisher's own announcements for that.

Do Japanese sets that are already out go up to ¥230?

The November notice's table puts products released in April 2027 or earlier at ¥200. The January notice, which handled the previous step, stated outright that products released in April 2026 or earlier were unchanged. Already-released sets keep the MSRP printed on their own pages.
