Pokémon Championship Series 2027: Japan's Season Map for Visitors

The Pokémon Card Game official site published the shape of Championship Series 2027 on August 7, 2026 — the structure, the full calendar, and the points system that decides who advances. If you’re reading this from outside Japan, the useful question isn’t what the season is. It’s which weekends of it you could actually be standing in. Five Champions Leagues span September 20, 2026 to May 9, 2027, and only two of them fall entirely on a Japanese holiday weekend. Everything underneath them — City League, Trainers League, the points that matter — runs at neighborhood card shops on a schedule built for people who live here.

Which Japanese Pokémon tournaments can an overseas player actually plan a trip around in the 2027 season?

Realistically, the five Champions Leagues, and among those Yokohama (September 20–22) and Chiba (November 22–23) — the only two that sit entirely on public holiday weekends. Miyagi, Osaka and Aichi all open on a Friday, so one of the two Master League preliminary days is a weekday. The Japan Championships 2027 has no announced date at all.

Here is the whole Champions League layer, exactly as the official schedule prints it.

Chiba really is the odd one out at two days, and that matters more than it looks. The season overview says Champions League 2027 runs over three days “apart from some events” — 「一部大会を除き、3日間での開催となります」 — and that at the three-day events, Master League preliminaries are held on both day 1 and day 2, with each player taking part in one of them. Top finishers from each day advance to day 3.

So at a three-day event, a Master League player needs one of the first two days plus day 3 if they make it — a very different flight booking from Chiba, where that split explicitly doesn’t apply and no replacement structure has been published. Treat Chiba’s two days as unknown, not as “probably the same.”

The one Junior/Senior footnote in the schedule is Miyagi: 「ジュニア／シニアリーグは14日（日）の1日のみ大会を実施します」 — Junior and Senior League run on Sunday February 14 only. For the events without that footnote, the schedule says Junior and Senior winners are decided on each of day 2 and day 3, and those tournaments complete in a single day.

The three tiers, and which one a visitor can realistically play

Champions League and City League are both advance-entry-by-lottery. Trainers League is the only tier with no lottery, no entry cap, and a fee set by the individual shop — which makes it the only one a visitor can decide to do while already in Japan.

The official Championship Series hub states each tier’s entry condition in one line, and those lines are the whole story for trip planning.

City League runs in four seasons: Season 1 September–November 2026, Season 2 December 2026–January 2027, Season 3 January–March 2027, Season 4 March–May 2027. Trainers League runs the full September 2026 to August 2027 stretch. Both are held at Pokémon Card Gyms — meaning ordinary card shops with a registered event license, not dedicated arenas — which is why the Tokyo card shop circuit and the tournament map overlap almost completely.

Championship Points come from the small events, not the big ones

The five headline events award zero Championship Points. CSP exists only at City League and Trainers League — the two Gym-level tiers — and the official schedule page states this by putting Champions League 2027 and the Japan Championships 2027 in the CSP-が付与されない (no CSP awarded) column outright.

That inversion is the most counterintuitive fact in the season and the one most likely to be gotten wrong in English. The convention-center event with 10,000 seats is worth no points. The weeknight tournament at a shop in Nakano is.

The official page prints three columns side by side — CSP earned, placing, and number of participants in that league — and notes that 「付与されるCSPは、大会の参加実数に応じて変化します」: the CSP awarded changes with actual turnout. Read down the rows and the payout reaches deeper as the field grows.

Trainers League runs on the same shape at roughly one-seventh the scale: 15 CSP for first, then 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, and 4 down to 33rd–48th place in a 56–89 player field. A tournament with only one participant does not count at all.

Two hard limits follow, and both are published plainly:

The prize thresholds, measured against your CSP total as of the end of August 2027: 30–79 points gets one promo card, 80 points or more gets two. On top of that, deck shields go to the top 250 in the Junior and Senior CSP rankings and the top 500 in Master. CSP also feeds priority entry — the top 40 Master, top 30 Senior and top 30 Junior players in the ranking as of the day after City League Season 4’s final day (expected early May 2027) get priority entry into the 2028 Champions Leagues.

Do the arithmetic as a visitor and it resolves fast. One City League win is 100 CSP and clears the top tier on its own. Two Trainers League wins is 30 and clears the bottom tier. Anything between those requires being repeatedly present at a Japanese card shop across a twelve-month window, which is the point at which the system stops being travel-compatible and starts being a residency.

Where the season quietly assumes you live in Japan

Nothing in the 2027 series announcements contains a residency clause. The residency assumption shows up somewhere less visible: in what the account layer requires and in how prizes physically reach you.

The first place is the Players Club account itself, which is the gate on everything — CSP cannot be earned or viewed without one, and Champions League entry runs through it. On August 3, 2026 the official site announced that My Number Card-based account verification is now live on Players Club, and it says what verified accounts will be used for: 「本人認証されたアカウントは、『ポケモンセンターオンライン』における一部商品の優先的な抽選および販売や、日本国内で開催される一部の公式大会などの参加申し込みに活用いたします」 — verified accounts will be used for priority lotteries and sales of certain products at Pokémon Center Online, and for entry applications to certain official tournaments held within Japan.

Read that carefully rather than catastrophically. The tournaments currently named are product-linked events, not Champions League, City League or Trainers League — none of the 2027 series pages mention My Number verification. But the mechanism is now built, the official wording explicitly reaches to tournament entry, and a My Number Card is issued only to people on a Japanese residence register. The second place is the mailroom. Also on August 7, the site published the registration notice for shipping cumulative CSP prizes, and it is unusually specific about what has to be correct in your Players Club My Page: 「賞品の発送には、プレイヤーズクラブのマイページにあるユーザー情報の『姓名』・『郵便番号』・『住所』・『携帯電話番号』が正しく入力されている必要があります」 — legal name, postal code, address and mobile phone number all have to be entered correctly, with a stated deadline of 14:00 JST on August 31, 2026 for that cycle, and shipping via Yamato Transport’s Nekopos service in early October.

The notice does not state that the address must be in Japan, and we are not going to claim it does. What it does state is that if the registered information is faulty, or the parcel comes back undeliverable, there is no re-send: 「登録されているユーザー情報の不備により賞品が発送できなかった場合、もしくは宛先不明で弊社に返送された場合、再発送は受け付けておりません」. No international shipping option appears anywhere on the page. If you are chasing a CSP promo from abroad, the delivery leg is the part with no published answer and no second attempt.

What isn’t published yet

Four of the five Champions Leagues have a date and nothing else. Only Yokohama has a per-event page with seat counts, an entry window, a lottery result time and a schedule; searching the official news index today, no announcement exists for Chiba, Miyagi, Osaka or Aichi. Yokohama’s page went up on August 7 for a September 20 event, which is a six-week lead time — a useful benchmark, not a promise.

Anyone publishing a full 2027 qualification path in English right now is filling those gaps with last season’s data. Last season’s data is a reasonable guess and a bad plan.

How many days you’re actually committing to

Master League preliminaries are nine rounds of real-time Swiss, and 7-2 or better advances to the first final stage: seven rounds of Swiss, from which the top 32 go to a five-round single-game knockout. Junior, Senior and Open run eight rounds of Swiss with the top 32 advancing to a five-round knockout. Twelve combined wins across the Master preliminaries and that first final stage earns priority entry into the Japan Championships 2027; a top-32 finish does the same for the other leagues. Priority entry is not a seat — the official wording defines it as being favored in the draw among people who entered in advance, so you still enter.

All of it sits on top of the two barriers that don’t change across the season: you play in Japanese, and you play with Japanese-language cards. The practical differences between Japanese and English prints are near zero for gameplay and completely decisive for legality at the table. The honest summary of the calendar: two weekends worth building a trip around, three that will cost you a Friday, one tier you can walk into any week you’re already here, and a points system that rewards showing up in the same neighborhood for a year.
