Champions League 2027: Master League Worlds Berths Doubled to 8

Published Sep 19, 2026 8 min read

The Rundown

  • Master League Worlds 2027 berths at each Champions League 2027 went from the top 4 to the top 8. Junior, Senior and Open League stay at the top 4. The notice was published September 18, 2026.
  • The change covers Champions League 2027 as a series, so it applies to all five events: Yokohama, Chiba, Miyagi, Osaka and Aichi.
  • Yokohama's entry closed August 21, so for anyone reading this now the extra seats are live at Chiba (Nov 22–23), Miyagi (Feb 12–14), Osaka (Apr 2–4) and Aichi (May 7–9).
  • Nothing else moved: Japanese-language communication, Japanese-language cards only, a Players Club account with SMS verification, and for Master League your own smartphone plus LINE and Sekanavi.
  • Whether a non-resident can actually use one of those invitations is still unpublished. The prize page repeats その他の付与条件につきましては、後日発表 (other qualifying conditions to be announced later).

On September 18, 2026 the Pokémon Card Game official site quietly changed the single most valuable thing a Champions League hands out. Master League’s Worlds 2027 berth went from the top 4 to the top 8 at every Champions League 2027 event. Junior, Senior and Open League stay at the top 4. The notice ran two days before the season’s first Champions League opened its doors in Yokohama, and it was not the only thing published that day.

How many Worlds 2027 berths does a Champions League award now?

Eight in Master League, four in each of the other three. The change is written against Champions League 2027 as a series rather than a single event, so it covers all five: Yokohama, Chiba, Miyagi, Osaka and Aichi.

The notice prints the before and after side by side, which makes it unusually easy to quote without interpretation.

TOP8」. “Before: Worlds 2027 berth, common to all leagues, final standing top 4. After: Junior, Senior and Open League, final standing top 4; Master League, final standing top 8.”

The series prize page has already been updated to match, listing マスターリーグ 上位8名 (Master League, top 8) for the Worlds 2027 berth next to 上位4名 (top 4) for the rest. Open League matters at exactly one event, because Aichi in May is the only Champions League 2027 running one.

Size the win properly before you get excited. Master League is the largest field by a wide margin: Yokohama seated 10,000 Master players across two preliminary days, and the final standing that pays out is decided on day three after nine rounds of real-time Swiss, seven more rounds, and a five-round knockout. Places five through eight of that are now worth an invitation. Places five through eight of Junior or Senior are still worth nothing but a story.

Which Champions Leagues this actually changes for you

Yokohama’s entry closed on August 21, so unless you already hold a seat there, the eight-berth rule is something you act on at the four events that follow. None of them has published an entry window yet.

Those dates and venues come from the official season schedule, and we checked the official news index on September 19: no announcement page exists for any of the four. Yokohama’s went live on August 7 for a September 20 event, a lead time of six weeks, which is a benchmark and not a promise. Chiba’s two-day format is still the odd one in the season, and the three-day split of Master League preliminaries explicitly does not apply to it. We mapped the whole season, including which weekends cost you a Friday, in our Championship Series 2027 season guide.

Miyagi carries the one footnote worth remembering if you have kids in the party: Junior and Senior League there run on Sunday, February 14 only.

Yokohama’s weekend is now a weather question

The second notice published on September 18 has nothing to do with berths and everything to do with whether the season’s first eight Master seats get awarded at all.

⚠️ Typhoon No. 25, as of September 19, 2026

The official site posted this on September 18 at 14:00 JST: 「9月18日(金)14時現在、「チャンピオンズリーグ2027 横浜」の開催日に台風25号の接近が予測されております。現時点では開催を予定しておりますが、台風の進路や気象状況、交通機関の運行状況次第では、やむを得ず中止とさせていただく場合がございます。」 As of 14:00 on September 18, Typhoon No. 25 is forecast to approach on the event dates; the event is currently planned to go ahead, but depending on the storm's track, the weather and the state of public transport it may unavoidably be cancelled. The go/no-go call for the opening was scheduled to be announced around 12:00 JST on Saturday, September 19, and the call for Monday, September 21 on Sunday, September 20, both on the Trainers' Website. One line matters more than the rest: 「なお、中止となった場合の代替開催はございません。」 — if it is cancelled, there is no makeup event. We are not going to predict the outcome, and we cannot relay it either: the Trainers' Website returns 403 to our requests, so check it yourself.

Follow that through and the consequence is arithmetic rather than speculation. No makeup event means a cancelled day is simply not held, so the Worlds 2027 berths and the Japan Championships priority entries that day would have paid are not redistributed anywhere. The notice also asks attendees to put their own safety first and avoid unreasonable travel, which is a reasonable thing to weigh against a free entry.

What did not change, which is everything else

The berth count is the only line that moved. Every barrier that keeps this event out of reach for most overseas players is still exactly where it was on September 17.

✅ Unchanged by the September 18 notice

  • Japanese-language communication. The Yokohama outline makes communication in Japanese by the player themselves the baseline, and language problems that impede the running of the tournament can result in disqualification at the organizer's discretion. No published proficiency level, no exam, no stated appeal.
  • Japanese-language cards only. 「レギュレーションに沿った日本語のカードのみ、使用可能」. Your English playset is not legal on the floor, and there is no proxy or translation allowance.
  • A Players Club account. Registration takes a mobile number that passes SMS verification, and without that verification you cannot submit tournament entries at all. Whether a non-Japanese number and address clear it is still unconfirmed.
  • Master League's app stack. Your own smartphone (tablets including iPad are excluded), your own LINE account, and Sekanavi (セカナビ) for pairings, timers and result reporting.
  • Championship Points. Still zero at Champions League. CSP comes only from City League and Trainers League at Pokémon Card Gyms.

So read the change for what it is. Four extra Master seats per event is a genuine loosening of the hardest prize in Japanese competitive play, and it loosens nothing about getting to the table. If you could not enter last week, you cannot enter this week either. What changed is the payoff if you clear all of it and then play very well for three days. The full eligibility breakdown, including what we could and could not verify about the account layer, sits in our piece on entering Champions League 2027 Yokohama from abroad, and the shop-level tier that has no lottery at all is covered in our Japanese tournament entry requirements guide.

🗼 What we can do about this

Four more Master seats do not change the rule that made your deck unusable: only Japanese-language cards conforming to the regulation are legal on the floor, and the deepest singles inventories for them are Japanese shop counters and domestic marketplaces. Send the desk the list you intend to run at Chiba, Miyagi, Osaka or Aichi and we check those inventories for you, then send back a free report: the specific listings we would pick card by card, the yen price for each, condition notes read out of the Japanese wording, and an all-in estimate including proxy fees and shipping to your country. You buy directly from the links; our job is finding the best way to buy it from Japan and telling you. What no service can do, and we will not claim to: enter the lottery for you, pass the SMS verification for you, or place in the top 8 for you. Entry is tied to your own Players Club account and checked against your own photo ID at the venue.

The question the notice does not answer

Here is the part an English-language write-up will be tempted to invent, so we will be explicit about the shape of the hole.

The Japanese pages tell you that a top-8 Master finish at a Champions League 2027 event earns a Worlds 2027 berth. They do not tell you how that berth behaves if the person holding it lives in Melbourne. There is no residency clause and no nationality clause anywhere in the Champions League 2027 documents we read, which is why the season guide treats non-residents as eligible to play. But eligibility to play a Japanese event and eligibility to convert its result into a seat at a world championship are separate questions, and only the first one is published.

What the prize page actually says, immediately after listing the eight-and-four split, is 「その他の付与条件につきましては、後日発表いたします。」 — other conditions of award will be announced later. That sentence has been sitting on the page since the season launched in August and it is still there today. Until it resolves, the honest statement is that the routing of Worlds 2027 invitations is unpublished. Anyone telling you today how a foreign resident’s Japanese berth is handled is reading last season’s rules and calling them this season’s.

Two official pages that do not agree yet

Worth knowing before you quote a number at someone, because the site is mid-update.

The season schedule page still describes Champions League as awarding the Worlds 2027 berth to 各リーグの上位入賞者(TOP4), the top 4 of each league, in the same sentence as the 2028 Champions League priority entry. The priority-entry half of that sentence is still correct; the Worlds half is the old rule. The prize page and the September 18 notice both carry the new split, so two pages say eight for Master and one still says four.

There is a smaller wrinkle on the prize page itself. Its summary table lists the Master League top 8 as a 出場権, a berth, while the section further down the same page opens with 優先出場権が与えられます, a priority entry right, before listing the identical numbers. The section’s own heading says 出場権. The change notice says 出場権. We are not going to reconcile that on the organizer’s behalf, and it is the kind of discrepancy that gets silently fixed rather than explained. If you are planning around this, plan around 出場権 and re-check the page before you act.

Neither point changes the headline. Master League’s Worlds berths at a Champions League doubled, the other three leagues did not move, and the four events you can still enter are Chiba, Miyagi, Osaka and Aichi.

Frequently asked questions

How many Worlds 2027 spots does a Champions League 2027 award now?

Eight for Master League and four each for Junior, Senior and Open League, per the official notice published September 18, 2026. Before that change every league was on the same top-4 line. The prize page for the series now matches, listing マスターリーグ 上位8名 (Master League, top 8) for the Pokémon World Championships 2027 berth alongside 上位4名 (top 4) for the other three leagues.

Does the change apply to Champions League 2027 Yokohama, which is happening this weekend?

The notice is written against 「チャンピオンズリーグ2027」, the series, not against a single event, and it links through to the Yokohama page. So on the published wording it covers Yokohama as well as the four events after it. Entry for Yokohama closed on August 21, so nobody can act on it there now; the practical effect for a reader today is at Chiba, Miyagi, Osaka and Aichi.

Does doubling the seats actually make Worlds easier to reach for an overseas player?

It improves one number and none of the others. Finishing in the top 8 of a Master League field that seated 10,000 players at Yokohama is easier than the top 4, but everything upstream is unchanged: you still need a Players Club account that passes SMS verification, a deck made entirely of Japanese-language cards, enough Japanese to run a match under a discretionary disqualification clause, and for Master League your own smartphone with LINE and the Sekanavi tournament app. More seats is not more access. It is the same door, held open slightly wider at the far end.

If an overseas player finishes in the top 8, can they use the Worlds 2027 invitation?

That is not published. The prize page states the Worlds 2027 berth for Champions League 2027 finishers and then adds その他の付与条件につきましては、後日発表いたします (other qualifying conditions will be announced later). No page on the official Japanese site sets out how invitations route by residency or nationality, and we are not going to fill that gap with a guess. Treat it as the open item in any plan built around chasing a berth in Japan.

Do Champions Leagues award Championship Points as well?

No. The Champions League 2027 Yokohama prize page states チャンピオンシップポイントの付与はございません (no Championship Points are awarded). CSP comes only from City League and Trainers League at Pokémon Card Gyms. What a Champions League pays is the Worlds 2027 berth, priority entry into the Japan Championships 2027, priority entry into the 2028 Champions Leagues for the top 4 of each league, and promo cards.
